# Preparation steps:

- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease and line two 8-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- Beat butter and sugar until pale and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.
- Alternately add the flour mixture and milk to the wet ingredients, beginning and ending with the flour. Mix until just combined.
- Evenly divide batter between prepared pans and smooth the tops. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool the cakes in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a rack to cool completely.
- Beat unsalted butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract, beating until smooth. Divide frosting and tint one portion pink and the other yellow.
- Level cake layers if necessary. Place one layer on a serving plate, spread with pink buttercream, then top with the second layer. Frost the entire cake with yellow buttercream.
- Adorn the cake with heart and star-shaped sugar decorations. Optionally sprinkle edible glitter or pearls.
